Human reproduction

Human reproduction is an example of sexual reproduction. Human fertilisation takes place inside the body of the female, and human sexual organs are specialised for this purpose.

Fertilisation involves the fusion of gametes to form a new organism. Internal fertilisation occurs via copulation, which involves the insertion of the penis into the vagina. Human reproductive systems are divided into the internal reproductive organs and the external genitalia. This increases the chances of successful sexual reproduction. The gonads are the actual organs that produce the gametes. In the male, testes produce sperm, and in the female, ovaries make eggs.
