| Vaccination and immunisation |
| The terms ‘vaccination’ and ‘immunisation’ are often used interchangeably. Vaccination is when a vaccine is given to a person to stimulate a protective immune response to prevent a specific disease, should they come into contact with that disease at a later date. So vaccination, if successful, results in immunisation and the vaccinated person has been immunised. |
| Both for society and individuals, vaccination is a highly effective way of preventing a number of infectious diseases. Vaccines are generally safe, and routine immunisation programmes protect many of the world’s children from infectious diseases that once killed millions every year. |
