BBV advice, testing and counselling services
Blood-borne viruses (BBVs), including HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C, can be transmitted via sexual intercourse. Prevention of BBVs is an important component of sexual health programmes and should be targeted at high risk groups (e.g. men who have sex with men, black and ethnic minority groups, injecting drug users, sex workers and young people).
HIV testing is available at a number of different facilities. Anybody taking an HIV test should be offered counselling beforehand. Those who are found to be HIV positive should be entered into an integrated network of care involving specialist healthcare services, social services, community services and the voluntary sector.
