TOPIC: ROLE OF PRIMARY CARE
Legislation and guidance
Several aspects of sexual health care are governed by legal and ethical regulations. Abortion, provision of contraception to under-16 year olds, confidentiality issues and fertility treatments are all subject to legislation and it is important for anybody working in sexual health to be aware of this.
Guidelines and recommendations on the planning, provision and implementation of sexual health services are available from a number of bodies, including Government bodies, the NHS, the National Institute for Clinical Excellence and voluntary organisations such as the Terrence Higgins Trust and the Medical Foundation for AIDS and Sexual Health (MedFASH). These all focus on providing a confidential, non-judgemental service that provides patients with the best care possible.
