Balanitis is infection or inflammation of the head of the penis, commonly caused by Candida, the same yeast that causes thrush. It is transmitted via sexual contact with a partner infected with thrush. Other causes can be a reaction to chemicals or materials next to the skin, or other skin conditions.
Symptoms include inflammation of the glans and foreskin, discharge from the glans or foreskin, an unpleasant odour and pain when urinating.
Cases caused by Candida are usually treated with a topical antifungal agent, with a mild steroid if the area is severely inflamed. Antibiotics may be prescribed if bacterial infection is present. Regular bathing in salt water is recommended to sooth the inflammation.
To prevent balanitis, males should avoid sexual contact with those infected with thrush. They should also ensure strict hygiene methods around the glans and foreskin, and should avoid materials or chemicals which may cause irritation.
